Johann Georg Lahr was born in  Hesse Darmstadt, Germany, on 26 Sep 1842.  As a young man, he went to medical school in Vienna and became a doctor. Shortly after completing medical school he left Austria and immigrated to the U.S. in 1849.  After short periods of time in New York City, where he married, and in Sandusky, Erie Co., OH, he settled permanently in Allegany, Cattaraugus Co., NY, where he and his wife, Henrietta Langohr Lahr, eventually had four daughters and three sons.  He enlisted in the Union Army under the name John G. Lahr in 1861 and served over a year before an honorable discharge in late 1862 due to lung problems.  Upon returning to Allegany he took the permanent name of George J. Lahr (Sr.) and ran the Lahr Hotel for many years.  He also practiced medicine, dentistry, and barbering from his post at the hotel.  At the age of 75 he passed away in Allegany, NY, on 8 Jul 1900.  The Lahr Hotel at 11 N. Second St., built around 1857, was razed in the 1930s.
